SMTP Authentication

Directions for configuring specific clients for SMTP Auth
  1. MS Outlook 2007
  2. MS Outlook 2003
  3. Outlook Express and MS Outlook 2000

Please note: Dial-UP and Extended Dial-UP (IDM) customers are now required to use authenticated SMTP. You must set your outgoing/SMTP server to be: mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com) and follow directions below to enter your email username/password for authentication.

SMTP AUTH Settings for MS Outlook 2007

 

  • Open Outlook.
  • Choose Email Accounts... from the Tools dropdown menu at the top of the program window.
  • In the Account Settings window choose NetAccess account, then click on Change...
  • Click the button at the bottom labeled "More Settings".
  • Click on the tab at the top of the window labeled Outgoing Server. Put a check in the box labeled "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication".
  • Click on "Logon to incoming mail server before sending"
  • Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the email settings window. Under the words "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" replace 25 with 2525. Click the OK button at the bottom.
  • At this point you will be taken back to the Internet Email Settings dialog box. Click Next, then Finish to save these changes.
  • Close Outlook 2007, open it and click on Send and Receive to test the settings

SMTP AUTH Settings for MS Outlook 2003

 

  • Open Outlook.
  • Choose Email Accounts... from the Tools dropdown menu at the top of the program window.
  • Select the radio button for "View or change existing e-mail accounts" and then click Next at the bottom of the Email Accounts window.
  • Enter the properties of NetAccess account.
  • Click the button at the bottom labeled "More Settings".
  • Click on the tab at the top of the window labeled Outgoing Server. Put a check in the box labeled "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication".
  • Click on "Logon to incoming mail server before sending"
  • Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the email settings window. Under the words "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" replace 25 with 2525. Click the OK button at the bottom.
  • At this point you will be taken back to the Internet Email Settings dialog box. Click Next, then Finish to save these changes.
  • Close Outlook 2007, open it and click on Send and Receive to test the settings

SMTP AUTH Settings for Outlook Express and Outlook 2000

 

  • Open Outlook or Outlook Express.
  • From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  • Select the Mail tab, then select the appropriate account. Click Properties once you have selected the appropriate account.
  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Servers tab.
  • Under Outgoing mail (SMTP):, change the server name to
    mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com)
  • Check the box for My server requires authentication, then click the Settings button.
  • In the Outgoing Mail Server dialog box that comes up, you can simply leave "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" selected. Or select the radio button
    Log on using
    then enter username. If you do not want your password to be stored, uncheck the Remember password box. If you want your password to be stored, leave the Remember password box unchecked and enter your password. Click OK when you are done.
  • Click Apply, then OK to save these changes, then close all dialog boxes. Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 is now configured for SMTP AUTH.

SMTP AUTH Settings for Outlook XP

 

  • Open Outlook XP.
  • From the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts.
  • Make sure the radio button for View or change existing e-mail accounts is selected, then click Next.
  • Select the appropriate account name.
  • In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field, enter
    mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com)
  • Verify that the box Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is NOT checked.
  • Click the More Settings button, then select the Outgoing Server tab and verify the following selection is ON:
    My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
    You can simply leave "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" selected. Or select the radio button
    Log on using
    then enter username. If you do not want your password to be stored, uncheck the Remember password box. If you want your password to be stored, leave the Remember password box unchecked and enter your password. Click OK when you are done.
  • Click OK, then Next, then Finish to save these settings and close all dialog boxes. Outlook XP is now configured for SMTP AUTH.

SMTP Auth settings for Netscape 4.73 and higher

 

  • Open Netscape.
  • From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  • Select Mail & Newsgroups on the left side of the Preferences dialog box, then click the plus sign beside Mail and Newsgroups to expand the tree. Select Mail Servers from the expanded listing.
  • In the box labeled Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server, enter:
    mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com)
  • In the Outgoing mail server user name field, enter your username.
  • Click OK. Netscape is now configured for SMTP AUTH.

SMTP AUTH Settings for Netscape 6.x

 

  • Open Netscape Mail (open Netscape, then from the Tasks menu, select Mail and Newsgroups).
  • From the Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings.
  • Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left side of the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box. In the Server Name field, enter
  • mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com)
  • Check the box for User name and password and enter your username in the User Name field.
  • Click OK. Netscape 6 is now configured for SMTP AUTH

SMTP AUTH Settings for Eudora 5.x

 

  • Open Eudora.
  • From the Tools menu, select Options.
    (If you are on a Macintosh, from the Special menu, select Settings.)
  • Under the Category icons listing, select Getting Started. In the SMTP Server (Outgoing) field, enter:
    mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com)
  • Make sure the box for Allow Authentication and click OK.
    (Note: On the Macintosh, Allow Authentication is under the Checking Mail icon).

SMTP Auth Settings for  Entourage

 

  • Open Entourage.
  • From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  • Select your account from the Mail tab, then click Edit.
  • In the SMTP Server field, enter
    mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com)
  • Click the button below SMTP server that says Click here for advanced sending options.
  • Check the box for SMTP server requires authentication.
  • Select the radio button for Use same settings as recieving mail server.
  • Close the advanced setting window.
  • Click OK to close all dialog boxes. Entourage in now configured to use SMTP AUTH.

SMTP AUTH Settings for Mozilla Thunderbird

 

  • Open Thunderbird. Choose Account Settings from the Tools dropdown menu at the top of the program window.
  • In the Account Setttings window on the right side under Outgoing Server click the Edit... button.
  • In the Description and the Server Name field enter mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.your_domain.com).
  • In the Port field enter 2525 (the default port is 25).
  • Make sure the "Use name and Password" box is checked then enter your full NetAccess email address in the User Name field.
  • Click OK, Then OK once more to close the Account Settings window.

SMTP AUTH Settings for OS X Mail

 

  • Open OS X Mail.
  • From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
  • Select your account from the Accounts window, then click Edit.
  • From the Account Information tab, click the pulldown for OutGoing Mail Server: and select Add Server...
  • In the resulting dialog box, in the Outgoing Mail Server: field, enter:
    mail.nas.net (or the appropriate domain as mail.domain.com)
  • In the Server port don't change it
  • Leave the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer(SSL) unchecked.
  • From the Authentication: pulldown, select Password.
  • Complete the Username: and Password: fields with your username and password.
  • Click OK to save the changes and close the dialog boxes. OS X Mail is now configured for SMTP AUTH.

For Earthlink, Prodigy, AOL and Sympatico Users:
If you are using one of these companies as your ISP, please note you are required to use their SMTP server for all out-going email. DO NOT USE SMTP AUTHENTICATION (they do not require it). Check with your ISP Provider for their latest SMTP server information.
